Victorian schools celebrate sustainability achievements at MCG
Schools from across Victoria were rewarded and celebrated at the 2011 ResourceSmart Schools Awards held at the MCG on 17 November.
Tupperware sponsored the morning tea for guests and provided Sandwich Keepers which contained a cookie or piece of gluten-free cake.
Over 300 students and teachers joined in the celebration which was hosted by ABC TV personality and zoologist Chris Humfrey and included performances from attending schools.
Will Gibson, Tupperware’s Marketing Events Coordinator, was on hand to present the winner Drysdale Primary School with the Rubbish Free Lunch Challenge Primary School award. Will also manned a stand promoting the Tupperware Lunchbox Fundraisers.
Tupperware’s major sponsorship of the Rubbish Free Lunch Challenge Primary School category provided finalist and winning primary schools with prize money and financial assistance to support them in attending the awards ceremony.
The winner Drysdale Primary School participated in the Rubbish Free Lunch Challenge for the first time this year. They engaged 507 students and the school reduced its daily lunch rubbish by 74.6 percent from 50.7kg to 12.7kg.
The school has been doing ‘Nude Food’ Tuesdays all year. Two Year 6 boys named the ‘Nude Food Dudes’ encouraged the whole school at assembly to bring nude food.
Year 3 students made a video that told the school why they needed to have a rubbish free lunch and Year 2 students made posters for the school.
Rubbish Free Lunch Challenge entries increased by 49 percent in 2011 which highlights the excellent work of teachers and students to reduce the amount of lunch time waste produced each day.
